My Motion Painting works are the next generation of visual art, fusing digital technology with the raw expressiveness of abstraction. These works update painting to function and have relevance in our media saturated world; while simultaneously breaking new ground for the medium of video. "In Egan's work, video is boosted up to the next level of art evolution. Just as painting began as a medium used to represent reality and gradually diverged to abstraction, with Egan's work video emerges as an abstract art form."(ArtWeek) Each video painting is rendered at luscious full high definition (1920x1080) and displayed on wall-mounted plasma or LCD screens which frame the works and locate them within the art-historical context of painting.
These works deal with the inscription of painting in time, addressing Rothko's ideas of painterly plasticity and Pollock's notion of the canvas as a place of action within a hyper-contemporary digital media framework. The static world of the picture frame is now replaced with dynamic movement that revitalizes painting and enables the medium to address the mediaization of both culture and sign. Each work is a hand-crafted animation created entirely on the computer using custom algorithms and animation software and without the use of prerecorded video or still footage. The paintings are rendered into perfectly seamless loops, removing the key element of time within the inherently time based medium of animation/video. The result is a visual world without a beginning or ending, an incursion which envelops the viewer in the hyperreality of the sublime.
